Durban Roller Derby is KwaZulu Natal’s first flat track roller derby league. Founded in 2012, we are run 100% by the skaters for the skaters.
Durban Roller Derby was started by Michelle Murray and Cara Munroe in 2012. Our first league practices were held at the picturesque Moses Mabida stadium while we searched for a permanent home. Durban’s first roller derby bout was held on the 16th of November 2013. The bout, which was Grease themed, served as an introduction to our two home teams, the MissFits (skating as the T-Birds) and the Eve's Kanevil's (skating as the Pink Ladies). This was followed by the Twisted Sisters bout in May 2014 and the launch of a third home team, The ExtingguisHers in 2015. Since then, Durban Roller Derby has hosted two inter-provincial bouts against the Slam Damsels (Johannesburg) and PTown Roller Derby (Pretoria), as well as the Wheels and Waves Bootcamp featuring the TeamZA skaters. The success of the inaugural Wheels and Waves Bootcamp has encouraged us to make it an annual event. We have also contributed two skaters to the national team (TeamZA) and taken part in the 2017 National Derby Festival (NDF).
Today, we skate as a single home team under the name Durban Roller Derby. We are passionate about our sport and excited to continue growing our league.
